In the month of January 1956, the hobby of many hundreds of silent hours reached termination, as far as research on the name and original of Gananoque is concerned.
The interest began in 1912, when a copy of Leavitts “History of Leeds and Grenville” came into my possession. In this work I found a listing of the name and an endeavour to determine the meaning and some derivations. This roused curiosity and I copied that list as given intending to delve some deeper into so interesting a subject.
So far I could discover at first both origin and meaning had not been presented by any author.
To me now that is not surprising, since the complete answer does not exist anywhere in any work that I can find available after some 44 years if careful application and search.
I sought for two source books for 6 years, and for another nine years, before locating them for sale.
My hanks went to Professor Harold Thompson of Cornell University who suggested the source from whence I might possible obtain what I wanted. I was successful.
Note: Frank Eames published his monograph in 1942. He continued his research for another decade an in the 1950s his new list of -------references was published in the Gananoque Report. TI Life presents both the monographs a published in 1942 and the additional list.
