Point Vivian is one of the old cottage colonies where many resident families have returned for generations. Most of the cottages on its forty-nine lots were built between 1879 and 1900. Although on the mainland, it was originally reached most readily from rail connections by steamboat. It retains its 1914 waterfront post office, store, and community building.

The main Seaway channel narrows between the mainland and Wellesley Island at Point Vivian, requiring huge freighters to pass close to shore. Ship watching is a special pastime here.

Louise Gaylord Cooke has documented the community history in her book, Point Vivian, 1877-2002.
