History: 

Until 1981 when John and Sarah Mara built their cottage on the island, Sara and her sister, Nancy Hammond “tented”  as children, on the island and as a family, swam there, had picnics, even celebrating the Fourth of July. 

Lone Pine Island, as all the locals call it, was the last uninhabited island in the immediate region.  When Sarah’s parents' cottage on Murray Isle became too small for the family, she and her husband hired her  sister's husband, Robert Hammond an architect in Annapolis, MD, to design the cottage. At the time the Mara’s lived in Colorado and wanted a simple, low-maintenance house, one that was easy to “open and close.”

The island will last in the hearts of many young children as Sarah and her sister, Nancy Robinson Hammond, collaborated in 2005 on the children's book titled, A Snug Little Island. 

Sara wrote the story and Nancy, a well-known River artist, illustrated it.  The book was launched at The Antique Boat Museum selling over 2,000 copies in Canada and the US.
