When Paul Malo created Thousand Islands Life in 2005, he did so with a hope that much of the "past" would be appreciated.  He wrote at that time:

"In the interest of finding appreciative stewards of historic properties, Thousand Islands Life presents some real estate of exceptional importance when offered for sale."

TI Life has compiled a number of resources to present these properties -  however we do not promote any sale.  All inquiries should be made to the contact on each property listing.

Note: Comfort Islands was recently sold.

Huckleberry Island, also known as Little Basswood or Lone Pine Island

MLS# S303183

Lone Pine Island – also known as Huckleberry or Little Basswood -  is a private small island  located between Maple Island and Basswood Island on the main channel near Clayton, NY.

The cottage was designed by architect Robert Hammond, Annapolis, MD, in 1981.  It is a 1000 square-foot contemporary cottage with an open floor plan which opens to a loft.  There are large windows looking out on the St. Lawrence River’s Seaway.   A Vermont Casting Wood Stove provides a focal point in the cathedral ceiling living room, with Douglas fir floors.

The cottage is surrounded by outdoor decks and there are unique sliding panels for window protection.

The protected docks measure 48’ and 32’.
Galloo Island Light House

Until 1981 when John and Sarah Mara built their cottage on the island, Sara and her sister, Nancy Hammond “tented”  as children, on the island and as a family, swam there, had picnics, even celebrating the Fourth of July.

Lone Pine Island, as all the locals call it, was the last uninhabited island in the immediate region.  When Sarah’s parents' cottage on Murray Isle became too small for the family, she and her husband hired her  sister's husband, Robert Hammond an architect in Annapolis, MD, to design the cottage. At the time the Mara’s lived in Colorado and wanted a simple, low-maintenance house, one that was easy to “open and close.”

The island will last in the hearts of many young children as Sarah and her sister, Nancy Robinson Hammond, collaborated in 2005 on the children's book titled, A Snug Little Island.

Sara wrote the story and Nancy, a well-known River artist, illustrated it.  The book was launched at The Antique Boat Museum selling over 2,000 copies in Canada and the US.

Dewer’s Inn on the River – 1649 County Road #2, Prescott, Ontario

The history of this property was written in detail in the April’13 issue of Thousand Islands Life Magazine.

“Riverlicious”and the Grenville Brewery, by Michelle Caron

Excerpt:  “Long before our paradise became a recreational riverfront, in 1869 an industrialist by the name of John McCarthy chose this perfect setting on the St. Lawrence River to establish a red brick brewery with his partner James Quinn. There, next to the grand St. Lawrence River was a bountiful abundance of cool natural spring water for masterful beer crafting. These perfect conditions came together with John McCarthy’s extensive experience in the distillery business. Producing 7,000 barrels of beer a year, he managed to grow the brewery into Upper Canada’s largest brewery. Furthermore, the natural foundation of a bedrock floor allowed for the brewery ideal conditions to house storage vaults on a bedrock floor basement. This contributed to the genius of making some of Canada’s finest beer- no wonder our secret garden cottage retreat is such a happy place!”
