John A. Haddock

A Souvenir, the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River

Alexandria Bay, New York, 1895

A landmark book about the Thousand Islands appeared in 1895—one of the largest and most ambitious regional works ever published.  The publisher, John A. Haddock, was author of some articles, many of which were contributed by others.  The publication was subsidized by means of advanced subscriptions sold to members of the new Thousand Islands Yacht Club.

The entire book has been scanned and made available online at the Canadian web site, “Our Roots” (linked below).  An index at the back of the book, although not complete, is helpful.  Large illustrations in the printed volume are not reproduced adequately in the online version.  As a reference resource, however, the scanned reproduction is very useful:

Franklin B. Hough, Editor

The Thousand Islands of the River St. Lawrence

Syracuse, New York, 1880

Dr. Hough, a distinguished New York State historian, provided a subtitle for this rare early book about the Thousand Islands:

With Descriptions of their scenery, as given by Travellers

from different Countries, at various periods since

their First Exploration, and Historical

Notices of Events with which

they are associated.

As the subtitle suggests, this work is largely a compilation of quotations about the Thousand Islands. Because of the early publication date, 1880, there are no more modern references. The book is not illustrated. A modern print-on-demand edition is available. The online edition is available at:
