Johnny Truesdell’s Abay.com

Have you seen Johnny Truesdell’s Abay.com? There are many useful sites in the region allowing us to take advantage of a host of Thousand Islands happenings. This is one of them and should be added to your “bookmarks”.

The site, celebrating 15 years of service to the community, includes a sister site, www.abaycams.com, which began providing unique web shots in 2007.

The creator is Christopher Williams who proudly took on the alias Johnny Truesdell to honor his late grandfather, a “river rat” of distinction.

Christopher tells us that “through the Truesdell name I am Alexandria Bay 5th generation. My great, great, great grandfather, Will Truesdell, was Irish Canadian and born in Leeds or Escott, Ontario and moved to Alexandria Bay in 1871.

Abay.com gets 5000-10,000 unique visitors, daily, depending on the content. “When I cover big events I get high traffic”. He says. Christopher has always lived in Alexandria Bay, and to the envy of many, “ I love the River and I guess that's why I never left”. On Saturday March 12, the site featured Johnny’s “Trek on Crooked Creek”, a fine example of the site’s rich content. When TI Life asked if we could link to the slide show, we received an enthusiastic “yes”.

Snowshoeing The Macsherry Trail - Slideshow

Posted Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11:58:29 AM     Abay.com - Alexandria Bay, NY 1000 Islands Region

"The Macsherry Trail is a 3-mile long hiking trail in the Crooked Creek Preserve, located in Hammond, NY. (Download a trail map.) It has a long loop which takes you out to Crooked Creek and a lovely view of Chippewa Bay and the St. Lawrence River. The short loop winds through the successional forest. Whichever route you choose, you will see wetlands and beaver ponds, pine forests and hardwood stands, and the rocks of the Canadian Shield. Wildlife is abundant."

Yesterday I decided to go snowshoeing at the trail.

The 1st part of my trip was really fun.. the last part 'not so much'.. it was becoming Man vs Wild back there.. It was getting dark, the terrain was rough, large flowing streams of ice had to be crossed... folks, you can honestly get lost back there if you're not paying attention. You also better be wearing plenty of waterproof gear this time of year which I was.

Anyway, I was exhausted when I returned to the trail parking lot,  but hey, that was the point of the trip so it's all good. I burned a ton of calories in the almost 2 hours I was back there. (Photo on right)

Note:  As we went to press, we received a new Logo for Abay.com.  It is now posted on our mail page.
