Pete Medcalf lives on Hill Island, near the Thousand Islands Bridge. The Medcalf family cruised the Thousand Islands on power boats in the mid '60s & '70s. Endymion, Camelot and Constance were frequent favorites. The Medcalf family was the first to buy/build on the most westerly end of Hill Island in the late '60s. The family spent the warmer seasons on Hill Island during the '60s -'90s. In 2002 Pete and Janice Medcalf took up year round residence on Hill Island on Needle's Eye Lane, at the end of the island, looking west up the river towards Wellesley Island and on to Gananoque.
When not making images, Pete is an avid boater, kayaker, and sailor. He loves walking about the varied terrain of the island. Spring, fall and winter are especially appreciated for the off season quiet and tranquility. Cross country skiing and snow shoeing are accessible on the island and in the area during the winter season. The vast areas of Parks Canada land on Hill Island is a special treasure in all seasons, providing unlimited photographic opportunities and vistas.
Pete is a retired professional photographer with thirty plus years experience in biological/medical and digital imaging. His interests are in creative scenics, natural landscapes and abstract photography of the Thousand Islands and surrounding areas. Digital image processing/manipulation are his passion.
He is a Registered Biological Photographer and a Fellow of the Biological Photographic Association. He has received numerous local, national and international scientific photographic awards.
His images are produced digitally or on film, digitized via a film scanner, processed in PhotoShop on Mac G4+ and printed on Epson ink-jet printers and media.
